Ruka is a small skiing town in the south of Finnish Lapland, nestled close to Kuusamo. By winter it enjoys one of longest skiing seasons in Finland and by summer encapsulates the stunning raw nature of Lapland.
In winter on the mountaintops the spruce trees collect a large amount of frost which in turn captures the falling snow, creating the unique shapes that Finns call Tykkylumi or snow trees.
Also during winter, around sunset, the landscape takes on a mystic blue hue, sometimes at odds with the skies tones. This, the Finns call, the 'Blue Moment'.
Riisitunturi is a beautiful national park close by to Ruka. The mountaintop there has some of the most stunning examples of Tykkylumi.
