Pastels from the Island of Burano, Italy.
I created these images with a texture as I felt that I was missing some of the feel for the beautiful island of Burano in Venice's lagoon. It took me a long time to arrive at this process.
The island is a small community, originally for fisherman. The colours were apparently to help the fishermen identify their house during the foggy winters. How true this is I am not sure. The island is also famous for its Lace - all handmade but an art dying out now. The island has a wonderful sleepy, friendly feel and the residents are so pleasant and welcoming. The church in some of the shots leans quite dramatically. When it was constructed it started tilting almost immediately and the I am told the architect responsible for the build lost his fee.
I hope these images go some way towards conveying the spirit of the island. A wonderful place.
Venice and Surrounding Countryside
Venice is a magical time capsule - so much history with interesting scenes almost everywhere you look. The surrounding countryside is green and beautiful with small villages and hamlets tucked away in small valleys and hilltop locations. Endless opportunities for exploring.
